Our local stars shine bright at Scarborough Originals

WHAT: Scarborough Originals
WHEN: First Saturday of each month in 2019, 1pm-5pm (next gig is 2 Feb)
WHERE: Jamieson Park, 8 Reef Point Esplanade, Scarborough
ENTRY: FREE

IT was only a matter of time before some clever dudes put their heads together to showcase our bright young musos in the stunning setting of Jamieson Park.

The FREE live music series Scarborough Originals is designed to provide a regular platform for local emerging artists.

Into its fifth month, the event opens the doors to a variety of music genres – from rock to pop and reggae to alternative, blues and soul, etc – and invites creatives from all walks of life to get involved.

The not for profit East Coast Originals work with a team of volunteers to make it happen and are always looking for artists eager to showcase their talents. This runs the gamut from face painters to drumming and dance troupes.

FAMILY FRIENDLY
Families, singles and groups of mates out for a day by the beach are encouraged to bring a picnic and non-alcoholic beverages to the slice of paradise on the peninsula.

This special part of the world has uninterrupted water views and it’s close to local cafes and restaurants.

The next gathering is Saturday, June 2, 2018.

Scarborough Originals relies on crowdfunding and donations and, to this end, raffle tickets will be sold on the day to keep the wheels turning on this worthy endeavour. Get your raffle tickets from the “merch” desk or volunteers mingling surreptitiously in the crowd!

Roll up for Redcliffe City Show: family fun

WHAT: Redcliffe City Show
WHEN: Friday, June 29, Saturday, June 30, Sunday, July 1, 2018
WHERE: Redcliffe Showgrounds, Scarborough Rd,Recliffe
COST: Adults $12; Pensioners and children (5 to 14 years) $5
Friday is ‘people’s day’ but you have to get the local paper and cut out the coupon to receive the deal, which is children free and adults $2 each (max. 2 adults per coupon)

Homegrown actor and author, William McInnes, will officially open Redcliffe City Show at 7pm on the opening day.

The much loved performer grew up in Redcliffe with his four siblings, leaving in the mid-1980s to study acting at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts.

Back in town for the show’s launch, McInnes will no doubt relish the moment when he declares the event to be officially open.

As with the seasons, the show promises to deliver some fresh new performances and activities along with the familiar favourites.

After an intense day of horse judging and show jumping, poultry judging and a championship dog show, the launch night is filled with V8 and moto cross action.

PLUS…

Who doesn’t get shivers up and down their spine when the words “Globe of Death” and “Wheel of Steel” are mentioned?

Witness the daring feats of Warren Brophy on the latter as he skips, juggles and flips, etc, on and in a rotating steel cage. It is 11 metres away from solid ground and Brophy has no nets or wires to save him if he falls.

Monsterfireworks follow and there will also be fireworks on Saturday night.

The kids will love the camel rides, animal nursery, puppet show, show bags and good old fashioned rides and sideshow alley games.

There will be live music, an arts and crafts display, an array of food stalls and many more special events during an action-packed three days.

The show has a long history that dates back to 1949 (first year 1959) and family members of its founders are still involved to this day. That is awesome and admirable!

‘W’ is for Winter and Whale Watching!

After the unrelenting heat of summer (and for much of autumn) it has finally cooled down, and it looks like winter is on its way.

But that doesn’t mean our winters are woeful.

Typically, winter is dry and mild, with temperatures from 11 degrees at night to 21 degrees during the day.

And during this chilled time of year, the sun rises at 6.30am and sets with a display of pink-tinged hues at 5pm.

Winter is also a beaut time of year to experience the whales passing by – June 1 signals the official start of the whale watching season.

Each year about 18,000 humpback whales travel north on their 10,000 kilometre journey from Antarctica to the temperate Pacific Ocean.

They bring their calves with them in search of the warmer conditions, as the bubs don’t have sufficient body fat to survive in the freezing waters of the Southern Ocean.

A selection of tours are available to catch a glimpse of these incredible animals.

Check out the Experience Oz website for a huge array of tours that cover a whole range of adventures, whale watching included, in our beautiful neck of the woods.

Book accommodation nearby at Scarborough Beach Resort. Perfect for attending an event at Brisbane Entertainment Centre – it’s less than a 25 minute drive to the venue.

Offering a selection of 1, 2 and 3 bedroom fully-self contained holiday apartments and onsite facilities including swimming lap pool, large heated spa and more.

Cher: Here we go again tour

WHAT: CHER, Here we go again
WHEN: Friday, September 28, 2018
WHERE: Brisbane Entertainment Centre

Who doesn’t love Cher?

We do.

She is the ultimate superstar, whose talent and persona shine beyond the universe.

Up there with the greats, Tina Turner and Aretha Franklin, she shimmers like a full moon on the harbour and exudes a powerful ethereal energy.

A goddess, her bold beautiful voice is so distinctive it is instantly recognisable (unlike the strangled kitten whines emitted by so many singers today).

And can that woman wear a body suit or what?

WOW!

Stunning and ageless, Cher is set to grace the stage of the Brisbane Entertainment Centre in September.

And we will bow down before her Good Graciousness as she performs hits from an extensive back catalogue that includes Believe (an anthem about getting over it and on with life), If I Could Turn Back Time, Dark Lady and Gypsies Tramps and Thieves.

It is incredible to think Cher has been making waves for six decades and has sold a formidable 100-million records.

Her Australian shows are bound to be spectacular – it is the first time in 13 years that she has ventured down under for a full tour schedule. And it will come soon after the cinema release of the Mamma Mia sequel (Here we go again) in which Cher appears as the grandmother!

Tickets are priced from C reserve $122.15 though to B reserve $203.60 and A reserve (do you wanna go there?) $305.45.

We’re talking LEGEND. We’re talking a NIGHT TO REMEMBER.

Jetty2Jetty 2018: it’s on again!

WHAT: Jetty2Jetty 2018
WHEN: Sunday, July 22, 2018
WHERE: Crockatt Park, Woody Point
START: 21.1km, 6.45am; 10km, 8am; 5km, 8.45am; 3km, 9.15am
FINISH: 10.30am for all

What a fantastic opportunity to bring friends and family together for a day of fun – with the added benefits of fresh air and exercise – following one of the most picturesque courses in the country on the Jetty2Jetty 2018 fun run.

You’ve got glorious coastal views all the way. What’s more, the course is pretty much level. What more could you possibly want?

The low down
Jetty2Jetty is an amazing community event in its 32nd year.

It was launched in 1986 by the Moreton Bay Road Runners to raise money for an organisation close to their hearts, Redcliffe Athletics Club.

The event has blossomed into a four-pronged running festival with dedicated sponsors.  Entrants are able to run like the wind for their own sense of wellbeing or nominate a charity of their choice to feel even better about their wellbeing!

More than 4000 competitors are expected to sign up across the four events.

It’s a huge day, starting at 6.45am with the half marathon (some people are a little bit crazy and very fit).

One of the things we love about Jetty2Jetty is its inclusiveness. There is a level for everyone – no matter how fast or not that fast, with the 3km event designed to attract families, beginners and those who prefer to walk and take in the view.

Jetty2Jetty 2018 website has all the details, plus great tips on how to prepare for the day.

Among some top-notch advice, it offers a list of running tracks in the Moreton Bay region:
1. Mungarra Reserve, Petrie
2. Redcliffe Peninsula (of course)
3. Bribie Island
4. North Lakes, Lake Eden
5. Centenary Lake, Caboolture
6. Wyllie Park, Petrie
7. Sheep Station Creek, Morayfield

Fun for everyone: from little to big kids

We all know what families are like.

It is so hard to keep everyone happy.

You want to hop on a bike and see the sights while getting some exercise and fresh air but he would rather be fishing and the kiddles don’t want to do anything except muck around on their devices.

But there is a way to keep everyone happy, active and engaged.

We have the recipe for bringing families together in harmony (sort of) on the Redcliffe Peninsula. No one ever needs to be bored – although boredom can be a good thing: take that book you got for Christmas down to the beach, sit under a tree and fall asleep.

Variety is the spice of life and we have heaps of it on the Redcliffe Peninsula.

  1. Ride a bike: The Moreton Bay Cycleway from Scarborough Beach to Ted Smout Memorial Bridge, Clontarf, is spectacular in every way. It offers the most glorious views and freshest air on the planet (this is purely subjective). You can walk it but it is the perfect flat terrain for a bike at a 22km round trip. Street Art Cycles offers rental bikes, which can be picked up from their premises or dropped off at your door on request. Bikes can be hired for half a day up to a week.
  2. See a ship wreck: Who doesn’t love a wreck? HMQS Gayundah at Woody Point has a colourful history that dates back to 1885. It was built for the Queensland government and used as an Australian Navy training ship and sand and gravel barge before being beached at Woody Point in 1958 as a breakwater. See this striking wreck while you can as her fate is in doubt after her bow collapsed in late 2016 causing safety concerns.
  3. Go fishing: Dangle a line at Deception Bay or for the big fish, hop on a Moreton Island Fishing Charter vessel. There are pickups available from the Redcliffe Peninsula. The promise is a premium deep sea fishing experience.
  4. Finish the day with ice cream or gelato: After a big day of cycling, ship wreck viewing and fishing, little and big kids need ice cream and gelato. The Harbourside Gelateria at Scarborough on Bird O’Passage Pde has both. Someone said their chocolate ice cream is simply the best while their gelato combos are mouth-watering and include cookies and cream, burnt caramel and vanilla bean.
