Let’s go fly a kite at Redcliffe KiteFest

When: Saturday, August 26, and Sunday, August 27 (9am-4pm on both days)
Where: Pelican Park, Hornibrook Esplanade, Clontarf

Ever seen a blue whale floating, not in the ocean, but in the sky – above Redcliffe Peninsula?

If not, you must have missed this spectacle when a blue whale kite, built to scale, was one of many amazing structures hovering over Pelican Park in Clontarf as part of last year’s Redcliffe KiteFest.

You won’t want to miss this year’s annual kite-flying festa, which has become the launch pad for the annual Redcliffe Festival.

Every year, kite-flying veterans from overseas and Australia gather to present a dazzling display of ingeniously constructed kites that last year included a zero-wind kite. Yes, that’s right – a kite that flies without any wind!

Professional kite flyers come from as far afield as Malaysia, China and New Zealand. Our very own kite enthusiasts from Redcliffe Kite Club also put on a terrific show.

Amateurs and families are encouraged to get involved to create their own kite at a kite making workshop or bring a kite from home to fly in the public kite-flying zone.

The two-day event has loads of other activities that include markets, roving performers and musicians, jumping castles, the KiteFest KidZone with heaps of free activities for children under 10 and a free BubzHub chill-out zone for parents and babies.

Pop this one in the diary because it’s going to be as “big as a whale”.
