Jetty 2 Jetty Fun Run

When: Sunday 19 July, 2020
Where: Start and finish at Pelican Park, Clontarf

Put on your running shoes now to get race-fit for the Moreton Bay Region’s most popular fun run.

Jetty 2 Jetty Fun Run has a distance for everyone and caters to all abilities. Anyone can do it; age is no obstacle with bubs in strollers to seniors aged 80+ in the running (or walking) for a finisher’s medallion.

You can choose from a 3km, 5km, 10km or 21km loop that follows the scenic Redcliffe Peninsula. Families with young children can enjoy the 3km and 5km events, which have no age restrictions.

The course along the waterfront extends as far as Scarborough for the 21km runners, who kick off the staggered event from Pelican Park, Clontarf, at 6.00am. The 3km fun run/walk punters are the last to start at 8.30am.

This year the event is raising funds for Chameleon Housing, with a portion of every entry fee donated directly to this important cause.

The Kindred Healthy Living Expo is back again this year with plenty to see and do including health services, active wear, footwear, gyms, supplements and personal training groups.

Our 72 hour itinerary: yes, that is three days of activities on the Redcliffe Peninsula

WOW. Where do we start with things to do in the ‘hood over a long weekend/mini break?

Day 1: How about Friday?
Wake up when you feel like it. Stretch limbs and consider hanging around resort-style facilities all day or venturing out to explore local area.

Decide to pursue the latter.

Head to Redcliffe from Scarborough Beach. It is a flat 40-minute walk along the Esplanade or a 12-minute bike ride – with the sea breeze against your skin and a view that is one-in-a-million. If the exercise is not an option or preference, go for a three-minute drive along Prince Edward Parade. Or catch the bus almost outside our front door.

Once there, an array of cafes and restaurants offer a variety of cuisines at reasonable prices. The vegetarian friendly Flock Eatery has gained a loyal following along with Bikini Beach Cafe and Cafe Diversity. But there are more than 50 eateries to choose from so take your time to find the one that suits you.

After brekky (or lunch) with the beautiful Moreton Bay always in view, take a stroll along Bee Gees Way, which is dedicated to the combined musical genius of the Brothers Gibb – Barry, Robin and Maurice.

The Gibb family emigrated from England to Australia, more specifically Redcliffe, in the late 1950s. The Bee Gees were responsible for hits such as Spicks and Specks, Lonely Days, You Should Be Dancing and Staying Alive. The pedestrian arcade resembles an open-air museum display that charts the brothers’ rise to fame and features statues and murals. It is free of charge and open 24 hours.

Day 2: Saturday
Wake up when you feel like it. Stretch limbs and consider hanging around resort-style facilities all day or venturing out to explore local area.

Decide to pursue the latter.

After a swim and workout in the gym (sure), have a go at a SUP (aka Stand Up Paddleboard) at Scarborough Beach.

The Floatin’ Fun team are professionals who work out of Scarborough Beach, almost opposite Scarborough Beach Resort. They hire SUPs, kayaks and boats that allow you to explore the usually calm waters of Moreton Bay. It is guaranteed to be fun for all the family, couples or groups of friends.

Afterwards, head to the Moreton Bay Boat Club for a late lunch (or book for dinner). The location is five-star, with views overlooking the marina.  On Saturday, there is usually a lunch special. If you arrive later in the day, you might get lucky and witness a magnificent sunset.

Day 3: Sunday
Wake up when you feel like it. Stretch limbs and consider hanging around resort-style facilities all day or venturing out to explore local area.

Decide to pursue the latter.

A mini break wouldn’t be complete without a day cruise to Moreton Island, which has a marine park inhabited by dolphins and sea turtles. Usually morning tea and lunch are served, and snorkelling is an option.

It is the perfect way to end a perfect weekend without arriving at the end of Sunday with burn out because you’ve totally overdone it!

Settlement Cove gets the thumbs up from families

WHERE IS IT? Settlement Cove is by the seaside, off Redcliffe Pde, Redcliffe
OPENING TIMES: All year round
COST: FREE

WHAT IS SETTLEMENT COVE?
For those not in the know, Settlement Cove is a fantastic day out for families with children of all ages.

It is a park, pools/lagoon and picnic and barbecue facility rolled into one.

Settlement Cove’s main attractions are the manmade lagoon and wading pools, which cater to all swimming levels.

The main lagoon has an islet in the middle and is rimmed by sandy bays. There are shallows, which are suitable for young children while older more experienced swimmers can venture out to the deeper areas.

During the summer months, life guards are on duty from 7am to 6pm.

KIDS’ WADING POOL
Tiny tots have their very own fenced-off pool that contains a mushroom fountain and squirting lizards.

FOR YOUR COMFORT
The palm-tree studded park gets the thumbs up from parents as there are shady areas and picnic shelters, along with barbecue facilities.

There are toilet and shower facilities on-site.

PLAYGROUND ALTERNATIVE
If water play isn’t an option, the children’s playground is another fab area for the little ones who will dig the sand play area and hang out on the swings and slides. With a renovation happening right now, the playground is set to improve with more fun play and learning equipment on the cards.

FEEDING THE FAMILY
If you don’t want to bring a picnic or DIY barbecue, a kiosk is also in the vicinity. And there’s always the huge range of takeaway shops and cafes on Redcliffe Pde.

According to those in the know, parking can be a bit tricky on sunny days so either plan to get there early or consider doing some research on parking spots nearby.

And another heads up – like car spaces picnic shelters are also in demand and people do arrive early to make sure they get one. As the old saying goes, the early bird gets the worm.
